Canada to Extend Steel and Aluminum Tariff Measures

The Canadian Society of Customs Brokers (CSCB) and the Department of Finance Canada have issued statements regarding the extension of certain steel and aluminum tariff measures that were set to expire at the beginning of July.

On June 3, 2026, the Government of Canada announced that, subject to approval by the Governor in Council, it intends to extend key steel and aluminum tariff measures for one year. The extension is intended to support Canadian workers and businesses, provide greater certainty for producers and importers, and help protect Canadian industry from trade diversion and global excess capacity.

The proposed extension includes the following:

Steel tariff-rate quotas (TRQs)
Canada plans to extend the steel TRQ regime for imports from non-CUSMA countries to June 27, 2027.

Current quota levels would remain in place:

Tariff relief for eligible U.S. steel and aluminum goods
Canada also plans to extend the existing horizontal tariff relief for eligible steel and aluminum products from the United States to June 30, 2027. This relief would also apply to eligible steel products subject to derivative tariffs.

Eligible goods include certain steel and aluminum products used in sectors such as automotive and aerospace manufacturing, public health, health care, public safety, and national security. Certain U.S. aluminum goods used in manufacturing, processing, food and beverage packaging, and agricultural production are also expected to remain eligible for relief.

The Government of Canada has also indicated that it intends to consult with Canadian producers and importers on possible changes to how quotas are administered for certain product classes. These consultations are expected to support ongoing review and improvement of the TRQ framework.

Importers should continue to review their steel and aluminum shipments carefully to determine whether TRQs, tariffs, exemptions, or remission relief may apply.

Buckland will continue to monitor this announcement and any related implementation details. If you have further questions about how these measures may affect your imports, please reach out to your Buckland representative.
