March 3, 2026.
We would like to inform you of recent developments in the Middle East that may affect global supply chains and transportation networks.
Recent military activity involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has increased security risks across key maritime and air corridors in the region. Industry organizations have warned that this situation may lead to disruptions in global logistics, particularly for ocean and air freight moving through or near the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Strait of Hormuz.
One of the most immediate concerns is the potential resumption of attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi movement. This corridor normally handles approximately 10–15% of global seaborne trade and is a critical route linking Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. If security risks escalate further, carriers may reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, which could add 10–14 days to transit times and increase operating costs.
As a result, several impacts to global logistics are possible:
-
Ocean freight delays: Vessel diversions or suspended sailings may affect schedules and container availability.
-
Rising shipping costs: War-risk insurance premiums and carrier surcharges may increase.
-
Port congestion: Rerouted cargo may lead to higher volumes at alternative ports and transshipment hubs.
-
Air cargo adjustments: Airspace restrictions and flight rerouting may lengthen transit times and reduce schedule reliability.
For customers who rely on Buckland for ocean freight clearance, please note that delays in vessel arrivals or terminal processing may result in containers becoming subject to demurrage or storage charges. Additionally, ground transportation providers may adjust fuel surcharges in response to increased operating costs linked to the situation.
Our team is actively monitoring developments and is already communicating directly with clients who use our ocean booking services to ensure they remain informed of any potential impacts.
At this time, the situation remains fluid. Buckland will continue to track developments closely and will provide updates as new information becomes available. If you have shipments that may be affected or would like to discuss contingency options, please contact your Buckland representative.
Thank you for your continued trust in Buckland.
