Surtax Remissions

The U.S. and Canada announced on May 17, 2019, that U.S. section 232 tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, as well as Canada’s retaliatory countermeasures, would be repealed.

In response to this, requests for remission of surtaxes are no longer being accepted from the Government of Canada. Remission requests that were received prior to the repeal will still be assessed, and the list of products eligible for remission of surtaxes on the basis of short supply will be expanded in the context of a next Remission Order, subject to the decision of the Minister of Finance and approval by the Governor in Council.
