On November 13, Buckland hosted the webinar “Navigating the New U.S. Tariffs on Auto Parts: Impacts, Exemptions, and Compliance Strategies,” presented by Dayne Edmondson, Customs Compliance Manager at Buckland. The session focused on recent changes to U.S. Section 232 tariffs on auto parts and on medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs) and their parts, effective November 1, 2025.
Dayne explained how new stacking rules now recognize USMCA-qualified auto parts and MHDV parts as subject to the auto parts tariff, which in many North American scenarios can supersede steel and aluminum duties. The webinar also covered:
-
Conditions and practical use cases for self-certifying auto and MHDV parts
-
The current gray area around claiming USMCA on self-certified parts and why importers should seek trade legal counsel
-
How OEM offset credits can impact decisions on whether to self-certify
-
Recent adjustments to China-related IEPA fentanyl tariffs and their interaction with other measures
